| Aluminum producer Alcoa posted a loss from operations of
$193 million. |
|
Revenue came in at $6 billion, up 6% from a year ago and
ahead of expectations .
Facing lower metal prices and a stumbling European economy, Alcoa earlier
announced it would close high-cost plants. Less than a week after announcing
that it was shutting facilities in Tennessee and Texas, Alcoa said its bid to
reduce smelting capacity by 12% would also spell an end to some activities.
Alcoa said in a statement that the firm had turned in a "solid performance in a
volatile year." For 2012, Alcoa expects global aluminum demand to rise 7% after
growing 10% last year.
