Wal-Mart Goes Green BIG TIME

In a move that could have a ripple effect on the packaging industry, the retail giant plans to reduce shipping container and product wrapping costs by 5% by 2013. That could save $14 billion, and spur packaging changes elsewhere. Wal-Mart Stores, the world’s largest retailer, wants its 60,000 suppliers to find more efficient packaging methods and to reduce the amount of packaging used, starting in 2008, while making the remaining wrapping and shipping materials environmentally friendlier. The company’s packaging move comes more than two years after consumer packaged goods companies began to feel pressure from higher raw materials costs, particularly for the plastic many of them use for their packaging.

What it means to buyers

Wal-Mart purchasing is working with suppliers to change packaging systems to reduce use of plastic films and paper.

Shipping container, wrapping and baling and bundling plastics will be targeted for expanded recycling.
